A clam fishing boat has run aground at Waikuku beach, north of Christchurch

A clam fishing boat has run aground at Waikuku beach, north of Christchurch

A Maritime New Zealand spokesperson says the crew of the Cloudy Bay Clams vessel 'Stormcat' all got off hte boat safely - after it grounded about 1am.

Managing director Isaac Piper is all praise for the skipper.

He says he did exactly the right thing - letting the boat rest on the beach, to avoid damage and anyone being hurt.

Piper says there are plans to re-float the vessel tonight.

    Maritime staff are investigating.
