A Bay of Plenty man who recorded a violent tirade towards Maori has been convicted under hate speech laws...in a prosecution believed to be only the second of its kind

Open Justice Reports Richard Jacobs was sentenced to 12 months' home detention and 300 hours of community work at the Tauranga District Court today.

The 44-year-old filmed a video from his Papamoa home in May last year where he called for the killing of Maori, and burning down marae.

The video was uploaded to Youtube...and viewed by thousands of people online.

Multiple complaints were received by police, who launched an investigation into Jacobs...and later charged him with inciting racial disharmony and knowingly making an objectionable publication.
