A view changes are needed to New Zealand's funding of hospital infrastructure

A view changes are needed to New Zealand's funding of hospital infrastructure

A report from the New Zealand Institute of Economic Research says if trends continue, the cost of hospital infrastructure will be 115-billion dollars over the next 30 years.

That's four times the amount we spend now.

Institute Principal Economist Sarah Hogan says there needs to be a dedicated pipeline and tight control over projects so they don't blow out.

She says it's likely Te Whatu Ora will need to get creative in how it delivers services.

Hogan says strengthening local and community providers could reduce the need for costly buildings.
