The Government is promising it's improving Three Strikes Laws

The Government is promising it's improving Three Strikes Laws

It's announcing it'll reintroduce new and improved legislation - to slap mandatory prison sentences on violent violent criminals offending for a third time.

Labour scrapped the regime in 2022.

This version will only apply to sentences above 24-months - and judges will have discretion to not impose jail time, if it's "manifestly unjust".

Associate Justice Minister Nicole McKee says they noted concern about cases under the earlier regime.

She says they've struck a good balance by ensuring lower level offending isn't caught up.
