24-year-old Jahcey Ngahere was sentenced in the Whangarei High Court today.
He was initially charged with the murder of Maree Ngahere, but pleaded guilty to manslaughter in May.
Detective Inspector Lloyd Schmid says any death is a tragic event, but when it is an infant as young as four weeks old -- it is simply senseless.
He says Maree's death greatly impacted the people of Kaitaia and he'd like to acknowledge the community's support.
