Road snowfall warnings are in place for Arthur's, Porters, Lindis and Haast passes - as well as the Milford and Crown Range roads.
MetService meteorologist Tam Pletzer says there are flurries across much of the Canterbury plains.
She says people travelling in snowy conditions should drive carefully - and stay up to date on the NZTA website.
A Fire and Emergency spokesperson says rain and snow is also falling in the Mackenzie District - which is expected to help with firefighting efforts.
There are also reports helicopters are finding it hard to get off the ground.
