Kim Kardashian to testify tonight at Paris trial of alleged armed robbers

The star will come face to face with the gang who allegedly bound and gagged her in a Paris hotel room in 2016 and stole $15 million of jewellery.

Kim Kardashian is set to testify in a Paris court on Tuesday, an eagerly awaited appearance nearly a decade after being robbed of millions of dollars of jewellery during the French capital's fashion week.

Ten suspects have been on trial since late April over the armed robbery in 2016.

The group of men nicknamed the "grandpa robbers" allegedly stole more than $US10 million ($15.68 million) from the reality TV star and influencer.

The trial has attracted huge media attention, with close to 500 reporters accredited.

Here's what we know so far.

When will Kardashian take the stand?

Kardashian is due to take the stand on Tuesday at 2pm, local time.

    That's 10pm AEST.

She's also expected to speak to the press afterwards.

Last week, her US lawyers said she's ready to "confront" the men accused of her Paris attack and that she would do so "with dignity and courage".

But they have not divulged what exactly Kardashian, who has been keeping abreast of developments at the trial, will say in her court appearance.

    Who is being tried?

Those on trial are mainly men in their 60s and 70s with previous criminal records.

"They're quite a team," investigator Michel Malecot said.

"But they made some mistakes," he said, noting DNA which led investigators to identify them.

Here are the 10 defendants on trial:

    • Yunice Abbas
    • Aomar Ait Khedache
    • Harminiv Ait Khedache
    • Didier Dubreucq
    • Marc-Alexandre Boyer
    • Florus Heroui
    • Gary Mader
    • Christiane Glotin
    • Francois Delaporte
    • Marc Boyer

Ait Khedache and Abbas are the only two defendants to have confessed.

Ait Khedache, known as "Old Omar", has admitted to tying up Kardashian but denies being the mastermind behind the robbery.

Another suspect in the dock, 71-year-old Abbas, later wrote a book about the heist in 2021 titled I kidnapped Kim Kardashian.

In the text, he described being recruited months beforehand for a team to rob an unnamed "wife of an American rapper" whose identity he only learned the morning after the heist.

Investigators said a man called Gary Madar, the brother of Kardashian's driver in Paris, tipped the suspects off that Kardashian was "in French territory".

This allegation has been ridiculed by Madar's lawyer, who remarked that 350 million online followers were already aware of the star's whereabouts.

What happened on the night of the heist?

On October 3, 2016, masked men posing as police officers entered the exclusive, discreet hotel where Kardashian was staying in central Paris.

The men, who arrived on bicycles, threatened the hotel concierge at gunpoint and forced him to lead them to Kardashian's suite.

She was tied up with her mouth taped and carried to the bathroom.

In October 2020, Kardashian told US interview David Letterman she feared she would be assaulted and murdered during the heist.

Last week, the court heard the night of the robbery could have gone very differently had Kardashian joined her sister Kourtney and gone clubbing.

Her designated driver, Michael Madar — whose brother is Gary — had been working non-stop for 21 hours and asked a colleague to replace him for the trip to the night club with Kourtney.

The replacement, Mohammed Q., and a Kardashian bodyguard, Pascal D., rushed back to the hotel after Kardashian tried to call them and then failed to pick up her phone when they called back.

"I saw that the lift was on the first floor, where Kim was staying," Pascal D. told the court.

"[When I found her] she was in a terrible state. She was crying hysterically.

"I asked what had happened, and she said she'd been robbed."

    'Heist of the century'

During what the French press has dubbed the "heist of the century", the masked men walked away with millions of dollars' worth of jewels.

That included a diamond ring given to Kardashian by her then-husband, rapper Kanye West, valued at $4 million.

The theft was the most valuable to target a private individual in France in 20 years.

The trial is set to close on May 23.
