GeoNet's upgraded the early-morning Bay of Plenty quake to a magnitude 5.9

GeoNet's upgraded the early-morning Bay of Plenty quake to a magnitude 5.9

The shaking woke up thousands of people, who reported feeling it after 5:30.

The earthquake monitoring organisation says deeper offshore quakes can take longer to analyse.

The quake struck 115-kilometres deep, at sea, about 50-kilometres north-west of Te Kaha.
