Pre-Christmas sales are featuring this week ahead of the traditional Boxing Day sales.
Paymark says spending in the last seven days before Christmas rises to around 50 percent more than the average week during the rest of the year.
Retail New Zealand chief executive Greg Harford says sales are always intended to get customers in the door - and spending.
He says there's lot of competition out there and retailers are keen to make sure they've got great offers in front of customers.
