Josef Gluck says there were dozens of people gathered at the Monsey home when a man burst in with a machete.
He told CNN that while he was trying to help someone with a severe head injury - he saw the man, grabbed a coffee table and hit him in the face.
Eventually, the attacker left - but Gluck followed, took down the man's license plate and called Police.
Police tracked down suspect Grafton Thomas about an hour later, when a license plate reader captured his car crossing a bridge into New York City.
The 37-year-old has been charged with five counts of attempted murder and one count of burglary.
