The defending men's singles champion and last year's beaten finalist have been eliminated on the opening day of bowls' national singles and pairs tournament in Christchurch

Taylor Horn and Tony Fabling have lost two of their first three matches in section play to end their hopes of meeting again in this year's final.

Recent champions Mike Kernaghan and Dean Elgar have both advanced.

Defending women's pairs champions Val Smith and Lisa Prideaux have suffered an early setback in section play, losing to Gail Waitai and Linda Ralph in the second round.

They won their other two matches and will progress to post-section with two more wins today.
