19-year-old Sheldon Tawhiti-Ormsby was sentenced to 18 months of intensive supervision and judicial monitoring in the Tauranga District Court.
Police say Rotorua Intermediate School teacher Alisdair Hay was helping alleviate a traffic jam in February last year.
When occupants in a vehicle failed to do what Hay advised, he took a photo of the vehicle, and the occupants started to verbally abuse him.
Tawhiti-Ormsby then got out of the vehicle and punched Hay in the face.
