National's launched a petition to preserve fishing around the Bay of Plenty's Motiti Island

Opposition fisheries spokesperson Ian McKelvie says local councils can now apply fishing bans wherever they see fit.

He says getting out on the water and putting a line out is a great privilege - and central Government should keep control.

McKelvie wants a law change - and wider consultation in any future talks about fishing around Motiti.
