Regional Economic Development Minister Shane Jones says money from the Provincial Growth Fund will go into getting temporary water supplies in Kaikohe and Kaitaia.
He says trucking water to these areas is costly, and this ensures communities can continue without hardship and disruption.
Infrastructure will be built to pump water from Sweetwater Farm to Kaitaia, and Lake Omapere to Kaikohe.
It will go through water treatment facilities before being piped to households.
