Staff at the Glenbrook plant, south of Auckland, have been informed by email and at emergency meetings.
In an email to staff, the steel manufacturer's chief executive, Gretta Stephens, says the affected employee is not seriously ill and is in isolation at home.
She says the company is working with the Ministry of Health to handle the situation.
That includes contacting employees who have had primary contact with this patient.
She says the Ministry of Healthy defines primary contact as direct face to face contact for more than 15 minutes - or working in close proximity in a confined area for more than two hours.
