A long sentence for a brutal murder
A long sentence for a brutal murder
7 March 2020
Yesterday 32-year-old Dr Venod Skantha was sentenced at the High Court in Dunedin to life in prison - with at least 19 years before he can seek parole.
He was previously found guilty of murdering 16-year-old Amber-Rose Rush.
Criminal law expert Warren Brookbanks says if a murder involves a high degree of brutality, the court must impose a minimum non-parole period of 17 years.
He says 19 years is a long time... but it's not unreasonable.
