Yesterday, 32-year-old Dr Venod Skantha was sentenced at the High Court in Dunedin to life in prison - with at least 19 years before he can seek parole, for murdering the 16-year-old.
Criminal law expert Warren Brookbanks says murders like this have a terrible effect on grieving families.
He says he understands Amber-Rose Rush's mother committed suicide because of the pain of dealing with her daughter's death... making for a particularly tragic case.
