It's too early to know whether a major fire in an Auckland apartment is suspicious

The blaze, at 51 New North Road, has engulfed the two storey building, which included a residential property and a shop.

Frank Walsh from Auckland City Fire Station says an investigation is underway.

He says the four occupants of the apartment have been accounted for.

Road closures will be in place until at least mid-morning, with traffic directed around nearby side streets.

One woman has been taken to hospital due to an injury caused while escaping the fire.
