The loss of the two senses appears to be an early sign of the virus - now researchers want to prove it.
New Zealanders who have the virus or are showing symptoms of it are encouraged to participate in a global survey.
Massey University's Professor Joanne Hort says it can be accessed on the Massey and Otago University websites.
She says they're hoping it trickles out around councils or research institutes to try and reach those who are suffering with the disease or may have a respiratory illness.
