The person in their twenties has not travelled overseas and has no known links to the region's seven other cases, who have recovered from Covid-19.
Whanganui District Health Board says the source of infection is still under investigation.
Chief executive Russell Simpson says the case reinforces the importance of complying with level four restrictions to slow the spread.
The public health team is following up with other household members who have been tested and are awaiting results.
