The trio tested positive after caring for patients from the Rosewood Rest Home cluster - where eight people have now died of the virus.
Canterbury DHB says damp face masks are to blame - made wet by a combination of sweat and moisture from exhaled air.
They should've been changed every two hours.
But Nurses' Organisation acting services manager Kate Weston says wearing PPE's not that straightforward.
She says there's a number of things that can render it ineffective, like the size of your face, or having a beard.
