A group of scientists argue, in an editorial published in today's New Zealand Medical Journal, that the post-lockdown period should be used to find therapies, in case there's a resurgence of infection.
Otago University Infectious diseases expert Professor Kurt Krause says one of the options they're looking at is creating antiviral medicines, which is a common approach to fighting HIV.
He says the medicines help stop the virus' proteins replicating in the body.
Krause says HIV also doesn't have a vaccine, but its antiviral treatments are very effective.
