Sixty-year-old Sammy Zhu - who works for the New Zealand Messenger - suffered a nasty black eye after the attack on Hereford Street.
Police say a 34-year-old man will appear in the Christchurch District Court next Monday.
Zhu says he's on the mend - but his eye's still swollen - and he's having headaches that make it hard to sleep.
