Jacinda Ardern has been in talks with Australia's leader about starting a trans-Tasman travel bubble.
But the Dean of Pacific Programmes at Auckland University's medical school wants the focus to be shifted to our island neighbours.
Professor Collin Tukuitonga says a Pacific travel bubble is less risky.
He says the Islands have remained Covid free from the beginning, while Australia reports new cases every day.
Some Kiwis can enter the Cook Islands from next Friday but will face a two week quarantine when they return home.
