Russell Tunnicliffe was involved in the crash that killed Constable Naomi McRae on Linwood Road in Karaka, earlier this year.
She was airlifted to Auckland City Hospital in a critical condition and placed on life support, but later died.
The 61-year-old appeared in the Papakura District Court this morning, facing charges of careless driving, making a false statement and exceeding the maximum period for continuous work time.
He has been remanded without plea and will appear again in July.
