Police are increasing their presence in Auckland after a rise in the number of drunken escapades over the last two weekends

They attended an incident on Fort Street last weekend where a person was knocked unconscious and multiple fights broke out.
When police arrived, they were met with verbal abuse and had bottles thrown at them - one officer suffering minor cuts.
Auckland City District Commander Superintendent Karyn Malthus says police were trying to disperse the fighting so the injured person could receive medical assistance.
She says police need to beef up their presence to maintain the safety of people enjoying the nightlife over the coming weekends.
