52 year old Martin McVicar has been remanded in custody in Spring Hill prison, accused of leaving the isolation hotel to buy alcohol at a liquor store.
Cory McVicar, thought to be his daughter, told the Otago Daily Times she spoke with McVicar earlier in the week and told him not to do it.
She said he's the nicest guy ever and wouldn't have done this intentionally.
She said conditions in the isolation hotel were tough as people are not allowed to leave their rooms, and there were guards in the hallways.
Martin McVicar will reappear in court on Wednesday.
