John Elsmore was tested after winning the Open Male Surf Canoe Long Course with his Lyall Bay team at March's 2020 Surf Life Saving Championships.
He is still allowed to patrol - but not during sports events.
The World Anti-Doping Agency doesn't require action against low concentrations of cannabis - but Elsmore's test was more than eight times the amount registering a positive concentration.
Elsmore's ban lifts on December 14, backdated from the day of the test.
