The Winged Foot Golf Club last hosted the 2006 tournament, leaving most players in the field clueless as to how it plays.
2011 US Open winner Rory McIlroy says at most courses on tour they have years of data to look back on to see how an individual hole is best played.
McIlroy tees off at 12.07am, kiwi Ryan Fox is off at 10.50pm, with compatriot Danny Lee off at 6am.
