A 1,600 hectare forest and vegetation fire has ripped through the area since the early hours of this morning.
At least 20 houses have been damaged or destroyed, and more than 100 residents have been evacuated from their homes.
Fire and Emergency says a further six properties north of Lake Ohau were evacuated this evening.
Four fire appliances are on duty overnight to protect houses and other structures.
Incident controller Steve Jones says 11 helicopters fighting the fire were stood down at nightfall, but will be back in the air at first light.
They will be joined by eight ground crews.
