Tauranga mayor Tenby Powell is taking leave to have surgery next month for the condition.
Powell says men need to take action if they have any hint there might be a problem.
Prostate Cancer Foundation chief Graeme Woodside says men over 50 should be getting regular checks so it can be detected early.
He says there is a 95 percent success rate when the cancer is found early.
Prostate cancer causes the death of about six hundred Kiwi men every year.
