Police HQ says people should do basic things like locking doors and windows, recording serial numbers, putting valuables out of sight, and switching alarms and sensor lights on.
National prevention manager Eric Tibbott says they should do the gardening and hedges before leaving.
He says a house that looks well-kept gives the impression somebody's at home, even if you're on holiday.
Tibbott says people should also stop the mail and newspaper and ask neighbours to keep an eye on their place.
