Seventeen prisoners are continuing to riot at Waikeria Prison -- despite a part of their demand being met

Overnight, the men agreed with negotiators to surrender if they were able to speak with kaumatua.

This was able to happen -- but it didn't resolve the situation.

Corrections is thanking the kaumatua for their efforts and willingness to assist.

There's concern the prisoners are putting themselves at significant risk by remaining where they are.

Damage to the building is significant.

Fire and Emergency NZ, Police and St John remain at the prison
