Corrections has revealed a prisoner who surrendered to Waikeria Prison staff yesterday was assaulted by other inmates

A group of 16 prisoners remain in control of a section of Waikeria Prison, and last night they continued to light fires and cause damage.

It's been claimed inmates at the prison have filthy drinking water and must eat from paper bags next to open, shared toilets.

People Against Prisons' Emilie Rakete says it's been clear for a while that Waikeria Prison isn't up to scratch.

She says Waikeria ignored the 2018 and 2020 reports from the Ombudsmen showing saying the prison was revolting.
