A temporary district-wide arming order has been put in place for Canterbury frontline police
4 January 2021
It follows this morning's shooting in the North Canterbury town of Kaiapoi that left two people in hospital.
A police spokesperson says the arming order was made due to a heightened risk to staff as a result of the shooting.
They could not comment on whether there were any gang connections, however enquiries are ongoing.
Two people are in custody.
