Nathan Te Hana appeared in the Christchurch District Court charged with the 57-year-old's murder.
Graham died at a Linwood house on Sunday.
Court documents reveal 46-year-old Te Hana lived at the same property as the dead man, which is made up of three Housing New Zealand homes.
As he was brought into the dock, Graham's son shouted abuse.
He was asked to leave the courtroom and was escorted out by security staff.
Te Hana's been remanded in custody without plea, and will reappear next month.
