Shawn Michaels has challenged Freddie Flintoff to step into a WWE ring

The legendary wrestler - who is a prominent figure behind the scenes of the company's NXT UK brand - has called on the retired cricketer and 'Top Gear' star to "walk the walk" after seemingly calling out the show's top performers

Responding to Flintoff and actor Tom Davis - who has also been vocal on social media - he said: "Hey, Shawn Michaels here – WWE Hall of Famer – and I’m addressing this to Freddie Flintoff and Tom Davis.

"Now, it’s my understanding that you gentlemen – and rightly so, by the way – have become huge fans of NXT UK. First of all, I wanted to tell you how much on behalf of NXT UK and all of the NXT UK superstars, we thank you very much that you appreciate our fantastic show.

"Now, also I’ve heard that here and there that you guys may be thinking about putting your toe in the water of the NXT superstars. I just wanna tell you, be careful what you ask for because between you and me, I’ve got no problem delivering on that.

"In all seriousness, somewhere down the road, when hopefully our world gets back to a little but more normalcy, you guys can come visit us personally and see if you can really walk the walk, OK? "You’ve done a great job of talking the talk, and now it’s time to see the rubber meet the road."

'Murder in Successville' actor Tom was buzzing after getting called out by the Hall of Famer, and he certainly seems keen.

He responded on Twitter: "I'm blown away by this... Absolute legend of the game, you best believe @ShawnMichaels Big T talks like he walks... LETS GET IT ON BABY! (sic)"

The exchange comes after Freddie suggested he and Tom could be the next big thing in NXT UK.

He teased: "Watching wrestling NXTuk on @btsport reckon me and you @BigTomD could sort these lads out (sic)"

Tom added: "Mate I’m down with that… We’d be the dream tag team."
