Two days after winning the freeski superpipe at the Aspen X-Games, the 19-year-old broke a bone in his foot after rolling his ankle, while skateboarding.
Porteous says he only had four weeks to recover, and he was in the gym rehabbing every day to make sure he was ready to compete.
Fellow Kiwi Zoi Sadowski-Synnott defended her world championship snowboard slopestyle title earlier in the day.
