And the Italians have become the first team to win a start from starboard entry after Team New Zealand needed to kill time and dropped off their foils.
They rounded the first mark 32 seconds in front and maintained that on the second downward leg.
Team New Zealand closed to within 22 seconds on leg three but couldn't make gains downwind.
Luna Rossa now have the advantage of Port tack entry for race six which starts at 5.15pm.
