Overseas spectators have been banned from attending this year's Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games
21 March 2021
The move has been made amid increasing activity and new strains of Covid-19 in Japan.
IOC President Thomas Bach says they're disappointed "enthusiastic" fans from around the world along with friends and families of athletes can't attend, but they understand the move.
Tokyo Olympics CEO Toshiro Muto says overseas fans who have already purchased tickets will be refunded.
A total of 630,000 tickets having already been sold.
And how about this for a literal shock - as the announcement was made by the Games organisers, an earthquake struck just off the coast of Japan.
