A police officer is in hospital with a skull fracture after an assault during a routine traffic stop in Hamilton just after midnight

A car had been pulled over in the suburb of Fairfield.

Police were speaking to the driver when he allegedly produced a baseball bat and assaulted two officers.

Another officer suffered a concussion and was later discharged from hospital.

A 17 year old male was arrested and will appear in the Youth Court in relation to the assault.
