The former Minneapolis police officer has been found guilty on all charges relating to the murder of George Floyd.
However University of Canterbury senior law lecturer James Mehigan says it might give confidence to those who wish to prosecute police officers in the future.
Meanwhile, the US Justice Department has launched a civil rights investigation into the Minneapolis Police Department.
Attorney General Merrick Garland says lawyers will also look at whether Minneapolis police use excessive force or engage in discriminatory conduct.
