More support for New Zealanders wanting to change their gender on birth certificates
29 April 2021
It comes after recommendations by one of the Government's working groups.
Currently, people can change their gender on their driver's licence or passport.
But to change their sex on a birth certificate, they need to declare it with the Family Court first.
The Government says it's working to amend the existing legislation, to enable people to change their sex on their birth certificate without going through the court.
It's hoped the revised bill will pass this year.
