A leading academic says more schools should teach civics and citizenship

A leading academic says more schools should teach civics and citizenship

Last July the Ministry of Education issued a guide - to increase student knowledge of their rights in New Zealand.

But because it's optional, not all schools teach it.

Victoria University Senior Lecturer, Bronwyn Wood, says wider teaching would be hugely beneficial.

She says she's watched kids arrive at Parliament with a petition - not knowing they need an MP to receive it.

Wood says it shows a need for political literacy.
