There were no major changes to the general classification following the 231-kilometre ride.
Most eyes were on time trial specialist Remi Cavagna in the last stanzas, but Bettiol says he backed himself knowing how beaten up everyone is feeling on the third week of the tour.
Kiwi Patrick Bevin was amongst the break that dominated the stage, eventually coming 17th.
Egan Bernal continues to hold the tour leader's pink jersey, with New Zealand's George Bennett moving up one place to 11th in the general classification.
