There are reports of record numbers of kids turning up at hospitals in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch with severe respiratory illnesses.
College of GPs medical director, Bryan Betty, who's also a Porirua doctor, says there's been an upswing in children with acute respiratory illness, mainly due to Respiratory Syncytial Virus.
He says it wasn't around last year because of lockdowns and border restrictions.
