New Zealand's dementia rates are projected to double up to 170-thousand cases by 2050

That's according to an Auckland University study published in the Lancet - which reveals almost half of cases could be prevented.
It recommends targeting dementia risk factors including brain damage from alcohol, smoking, diabetes and high blood pressure.
Researcher Etu Ma'u says we must also improve our brains ability to manage the changes caused by brain damage.
He says that includes ensuring we all have a good education level and staying socially connected - which is why hearing loss is dangerous.
