Sixteen of the 18 crew on Spanish-flagged Playa Zahara have Covid-19.
They were swabbed at Port Taranaki on Tuesday after reports of a flu-like illness onboard.
The vessel is heading to Lyttelton Port where officials are working on quarantine arrangements.
They could quarantine aboard the ship, or be transferred to MIQ.
Meanwhile, 16 crew from the Viking Bay are in MIQ in Wellington - 15 with the virus, and one who became unwell after testing negative.
