For more than a year, the Wellington and Hutt hospitals have been investigating how serious traumatic brain injuries could be ruled out with a simple blood test.
They're doing so by measuring the biomarkers released into the blood stream when a person's brain is injured.
They're wanting to test up to a thousand patients by the end of next year, and are currently tracking around 300.
Lead researcher Dr Alice Rogan says it could be transformative in non-urban areas, that have smaller hospitals without CT scanners.
