The Otago Daily Times reports he appeared in Dunedin District Court today - facing charges of assaulting a woman and common assault in May.
His lawyer Anne Stevens has asked for the case to be adjourned so Frizell can complete the requirements of diversion - and avoid a conviction.
Outside court, he apologised to the people involved, his family and friends, and the wider community.
Frizzell says a plan's in place with counsellors to address areas he wants to work on.
The alleged incident took place on May 9, with police at the time saying they were investigating a violent episode outside an Octagon bar.
